Opti-TEK HydraCut®

HydraCut drastically increases safety while lowering operational costs associated with wire line as well as potentially saving a large portion of the string for future use.

Product summary

HydraCut enables through-reel-valve severance of coiled tubing near the stuck point, allowing operators to perform controlled cuts without cutting tubing above the injector. This approach improves surface safety, reduces operational exposure, and increases the likelihood of recovering thousands of feet of valuable tubing and bottom hole assembly components.

The HydraCut tool is designed to cut the coiled tubing down the well above the stuck point to enable retrieval of most (or all) of the string. It is pumped through the reel and does not require any cutting of the coil on surface. Since most stuck pipe locations originate at the BHA, cutting just above this means that the entire CT string can be retrieved from the well without significant damage allowing it to be run again. This method of cutting pipe also eliminates the hazards associated with working at height that is required when rigging up wireline equipment above the CT injector.

Pressure to activate HydraCut is normally achieved using a ball to seat on a HydraShock tool in the BHA or a coiled tubing Rescue Tool pumped before the HydraCut tool. In situations where pressuring up the coiled tubing string is not possible the tool can be setup to activate on hydrostatic pressure alone.

Features

  • Through-reel-valve deployment allows the tool to be run without cutting the coiled tubing above the injector.

  • Designed to cut coiled tubing near the stuck point in vertical or horizontal sections of the wellbore.

  • Works in conjunction with the HydraShock system to precisely place the cut in the tubing string.

  • Available for multiple tubing sizes ranging from 1-¼” to 2-7/8” coiled tubing.

Benefits

  • Greatly improves surface safety by eliminating the need to cut coiled tubing above the injector.

  • Reduces operational risk by avoiding exposure to unsecured or open tubing at surface.

  • Lowers intervention costs associated with conventional wireline cutting methods.

  • Allows recovery of a large portion of the tubing string for future use.

  • Enables controlled tubing cuts closer to the actual stuck point, improving fishing and recovery success.
