The Power of Resilience
Dr. Lezama’s approach to overcoming challenges and her unwavering commitment to progress highlight the power of resilience and ambition. Her story is not just a celebration of achievement but a powerful reminder of the limitless potential in all of us to strive for excellence and challenge boundaries.
Dr. Tatiana Lezama, Organic Oil Recovery Project Engineer, bringing expertise in subsurface and production disciplines. She recently earned her PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Aberdeen, where she advanced research in environmentally friendly emulsification and demulsification processes. With experience at international service companies and a national oil company (NOC), she is based in our Aberdeen office, supporting major North Sea projects and delivering solutions for our UK-based customers.
Dr. Lezama’s most notable accomplishment is earning her Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering during the unexpected disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. When her university lab shut down for months, her research faced the possibility of indefinite delay. Rather than be deterred, she faced the challenge with resourcefulness and determination.
"That period taught me how to adapt when things are out of my control," she shares. "Finishing my degree despite those setbacks reinforced my ability to stay organized, solve problems creatively, and persist even when the odds seemed daunting."
Now, she applies those same skills to her growing career in energy. Her resilience has become not just a personal strength but an inspiration for others who follow in her footsteps.
Women Redefining the Energy Sector
The energy sector has long been male-dominated, but Dr. Lezama takes pride in the growing number of women in leadership, technical, and operational roles. “We’re seeing real progress,” she says. “More companies are prioritizing diversity and inclusion, and that’s making a difference.”
Her contributions extend well beyond her technical expertise. Whether mentoring colleagues, collaborating with peers, or advising university students, Dr. Lezama is deeply committed to elevating others. “I want to show the next generation of women that energy is a field where they belong,” she affirms.
Her first offshore assignment was pivotal in challenging stereotypes about gender and capability. “I was nervous about how I would fit into a traditionally male environment,” she recalls. “But the team was incredibly supportive, and I quickly realized that many of the barriers we face stem from assumptions rather than reality. Pushing past those fears opens up possibilities you never imagined.”
Unlocking Opportunity for All
Dr. Lezama believes achieving gender equality requires not only organizational change but also a cultural shift beginning with education. “We need to dismantle outdated notions of ‘girl jobs’ versus ‘boy jobs’ early on,” she stresses. “When we show girls that engineering and energy are viable, impactful career paths, we expand their horizons and their confidence.”
Mentorship programs, internships, and hands-on industry exposure are critical to breaking down barriers. Dr. Lezama frequently speaks to students, sharing her experiences and opening doors to opportunities they might not have considered. “Representation matters,” she emphasizes. “When young women see someone who looks like them succeeding in this field, it plants a seed of possibility.”
Her advice to women entering male-dominated industries is both practical and empowering. “You’ll face challenges, but focus on your work and keep learning. Build a support network, seek guidance when you need it, and don’t be afraid to take risks,” she advises. “The most important thing you can do is believe in your ability to contribute and thrive, even when the odds feel stacked against you.”
A Catalyst for Equality
Dr. Tatiana Lezama’s story is an inspiring testament to what’s possible when courage intersects with opportunity. Her persistence, leadership, and passion for uplifting others make her a trailblazer in the energy sector.
“We’ve made incredible strides,” she says, “but there’s still more to be done. By supporting each other, breaking down stereotypes, and ensuring equal opportunities for all, we can create a world where equality thrives.”
Dr. Lezama’s remarkable journey highlights the progress we can achieve and serves as a call to action. Her story challenges us to keep pushing forward—for all women and girls everywhere.
